In 2019, the Golden Horseshoe Military Appreciation event to benefit The Folds of Honor Foundation. This captain’s choice golf competition and banquet was created to celebrate our military with the hopes of donating enough funds for one scholarship. Thanks to the support of Colonial Williamsburg, KemperSports and the Hampton Roads community, three scholarships ($15,000) were donated and a tradition began. Since then, the event has grown annually with many of the same participants and sponsors even through the challenge of a global pandemic. The latest event was held on September 12, 2022 and resulted in over $53,ooo being contributed to the Folds of Honor Foundation.
The historic location of Colonial Williamsburg provides the perfect backdrop, not only as the birthplace of American democracy, but in the deep patriotic roots tied to the area with numerous military bases and with more than two-thirds of the participants being active, retired, or former service members .
Each year the event starts with a Color Guard procession led by the Fife & Drum corps and kicked off with the boom of a musket and ends with an awards dinner prepared by the Williamsburg Inn. “The support for our military families displayed at this event is truly incredible,” stated tournament organizer Jerry Morelli. “We are very fortunate to have such loyal sponsors, hardworking volunteers and generous participants to make this day what it is: a meaningful and fun day of golf for a great cause.”
The fifth annual event will be held on September 11, 2023 and will fittingly embrace the new Folds initiative, to include First Responders in the mission.
