The Lighting of the Cressets: A Colonial Williamsburg Tradition

As dusk descends over Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area, and the autumn air turns crisp, the townspeople gather to witness a timeless tradition unfold. At nightfall, fifers, drummers, and other musicians accompany skilled costumed interpreters as they carry out the 18th-century task of “Lighting the Cressets.” These baskets of kindling, perched five feet off the ground and spanning the length of Duke of Gloucester Street, cast a flickering, amber light on the brick & cobblestone pathways.

This tradition is right up there with ginger cakes and tri-corn hats as being quintessential Colonial Williamsburg. When in town, you can join these festivities starting at 6pm on Thursday, Friday, & Saturday nights in October & November or select dates in December. Best of all, these delightful evening events are free to attend, making them a perfect family outing or romantic evening under the moonlight. So, leave behind the LEDs and join us for an immersive experience to a time when candles, lanterns, and firewood were the primary sources of illumination.

Book a stay in a Colonial House or Tavern Room on Duke of Gloucester Street and enjoy the scene from the cozy confines of your room, or take a leisurely stroll into the Historic Area when staying at the Williamsburg Inn, Griffin Hotel, or Williamsburg Lodge!
