Dining with History: Honoring Dr. Opal Lee

March 23 – March 31, 2025

Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Opal Lee, “The Grandmother of Juneteenth,” with a dining experience inspired by her passion for community, history, and agriculture. A tireless activist who played a pivotal role in making Juneteenth a national holiday, Dr. Lee continues to be a force for change, dedicating her life to education, equity, and the power of food to bring people together.

Executive Chef Julianne Gutierrez created a menu that pays tribute to Dr. Opal Lee’s dedication to farming and nourishment, beginning with a vibrant salad inspired by the community farm she established at 92 years old. The entrée features cornmeal-crusted blue catfish, a nod to her deep Texas roots and the dish named in her honor at Bonton Farms. The evening concludes with a rich heirloom carrot cake, celebrating the abundance and generosity of the land she cherishes.
