Colonial Williamsburg: A Legacy of Golf Innovation

Colonial Williamsburg Resorts boasts a rich history of creating iconic golf experiences.

  • The Williamsburg Inn Golf Course: In 1947, John D. Rockefeller Jr. commissioned a project for a 9-hole golf course on the land behind The Williamsburg Inn.
  • The Spotswood Course: In 1963, Robert Trent Jones Sr., the most prolific golf architect at the time, reimagined the 9 holes and created what Golf Magazine called “the best short nine-hole course in the country.” This 3,745-yard layout, was named after the first royal representative to reside in the Governor’s Palace, Alexander Spotswood, who sent expeditioners westward, to the land beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains, and rewarded them with golden, horseshoe-shaped medallions upon their return.
  • The Shoe: Coming in 2025, this new par-3 course will round out the golfing experience in the surrounding city of Williamsburg, which contains 15 courses across 9 championship-level clubs. These layouts, designed by legends, like Robert Trent Jones Sr., Rees Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Pete Dye, Curtis Strange, and more have quietly cemented Williamsburg as a premier golf destination in the U.S. Now, with Colonial Williamsburg’s addition of The Shoe, the destination will provide a warm welcome to those taking their first steps onto a golf course while providing the iconic experience at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in a fraction of the time.
